MLK Day of Service: Coastal Cleanup, Native Planting, and Nonprofit Expo

Each year, on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is observed as a "day on, not a day off." MLK Day of Service is intended to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, create solutions to social problems, and move us closer to Dr. King's vision of community.

About the event

This year, Outdoor Connections will be hosting a Day Of Service at Virginia Key North Point Park at its Adventure hub, The Virginia Key Outdoor Center. There will be a nonprofit exhibition fair during this event. Participants will be able to get information from local organizations and have the opportunity to sign up and get more involved with their program offerings!

Service Opportunities

9:30AM - 11AM: Coastal Clean Up - We will be cleaning up our shores on Virginia Key. *Limited* Free Kayak rentals are available to Volunteers that RSVP at vkoc.net/cleanups. Free rentals are available at a first come, first serve basis. You must RSVP. We will also have a on land crew, cleaning the shoreline. Please RSVP. For those going on the water, you will be departing at 9:30AM. You must arrive 20 minutes prior for check-ins. Check ins start as early as 8:30AM

11:40AM - 01:00PM: Invasive Plant Removal - Join us and Citizens for a Better South Florida as remove invasives.

***What Should I Bring? - Dress for the weather and wear appropriate foot-wear. We recommend closed-toed shoes for beach cleanup and water shoes for kayaking/SUP - Sunglasses and hat are highly recommended. Bring gloves if you have them (we suggest reusable working, gardening or dish gloves that you can pick up at the grocery store/home depot) We will have some onsite but cannot guarantee they will be in your size!

- Reusable Water bottle. There will be water stations to refill. This is a PLASTIC FREE EVENT! Forgot yours? Don’t worry, VKOC will have some for sale. Bring your Friends, we’re gonna need all the help we can get!

**If you are under 18 and coming without a parent or guardian, you must have a parent/guardian sign the waiver form in advance

***CHECK-INS AND DIRECTIONS Check ins will begin at 8:30AM at Virginia Key Outdoor Center. For detail directions visit vkoc.net/directions

Please show your RSVP confirmation email to be allowed into the park to avoid paying the $8 park admission
