Outdoor Connections hosts first ever Community Fishing Clinic at the Virginia Key Outdoor Center

This past Saturday on November 6th, 2021, Outdoor Connections hosted its first Community Fishing Clinic at its 'Adventure Hub' The Virginia Key Outdoor Center(VKOC). Outdoor Connections is a women-led and founded nonprofit media and

adventure collective that engages, educates, and empowers urban communities. Through first-hand experience, Outdoor Connections seeks to inspire confidence, leadership, and environmental stewardship to all our participants to build healthy communities and change the world. The Community Fishing Clinic was advertised to dozens of local public schools throughout the city of Miami. City of Miami Commissioners and the Park Department also assisted in notifying their constituents about this unique learning opportunity. Twenty children from various districts of Miami participated in the clinic that aimed to create

responsible marine resource stewards.

The clinic focused on teaching the children fundamental saltwater fishing skills and providing them with a positive fishing experience. More than 82% of adults surveyed on the Outdoor Industry's 2018 special report on Fishing were introduced to fishing during childhood. After the age of 12, it was much less likely for a person to try Fishing. Those participants who did fish during childhood grew up with positive memories of the activity, like spending time outside and enjoying family and friends. Outdoor Connections firmly believes that connecting youth to Fishing will ensure that our world's waterways are protected and healthy communities.

Local Bait and Fishing Supplier Crook & Crook donated over forty rods and reels for Clinic participants to learn hands-on fishing exercises. Those who attended the fishing clinic in its entirety were not only able to take home a fun experience and new knowledge but a complimentary fishing rod and reel as well! Outdoor Connections and VKOC Staff facilitated a safe learning environment with the help of the Youth Environmental Alliance, another local nonprofit that delivers hands-on educational programs with a focus on habitat restoration

and providing recreational opportunities.

Outdoor Connections hopes to continue to provide opportunities for residents to connect to the outdoors and each other. Join the Outdoor Connections

mailing list on their website to receive further updates to find out when the next community clinic will be held. You're able to support Outdoor Connections on Give Miami Day on November 18th and the other 364 days by visiting their website or checking out its local Adventure Hub, The Virginia Key Outdoor Center. A portion of proceeds collected from kayak, paddleboard, and mountain bike rentals supports Outdoor Connection programs. Have fun in the sun AND help support your community through Outdoor Connections!
